Cheyenne River Health Center Staff Quarters
The Cheyenne River Health Center Staff Quarters is a planned community of 131 homes on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation. The homes provide staff housing for the nearby Cheyenne River Health Center. Special design considerations included the extreme climate conditions and remote location of the central South Dakota site. All units were designed to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star label and Indian Health Service design standards. Emergency safe rooms were designed and construction to FEMA standards. The design for the community of homes looked to the story of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe as there was a great emphasis on community and the comprehensive view of people and the environment. Each house is oriented to the cardinal direction, the four winds, an important feature to the Lakota Culture.
Green principals included: lot design, preparation of land, highly insulative walls with the use of sips and insulated concrete forms, low flow plumbing fixtures, energy star appliances, optimal indoor environmental quality with the use of low emitting materials and manuals for owners educating them about the maintenance and operations of the homes ‘green’ features.
