Tohono O’odham San Xavier Office Complex Competition
The Architecture Company was selected to participate in a design competition for the San Xavier Office Complex and Council Chambers for the San Xavier District, Tohono O’odham Nation (TON). This multi-level district complex would be located near the historic San Xavier Mission overlooking the agricultural fields of the San Xavier village.
The proposed design concepts were developed around the story of “a lantern in the desert” to honor the San Xavier Mission and to represent the wisdom and way-finding that the TON tribal leaders and management bring to the leadership of the Tribe’s future. The proposed design was respectful of their desire for self-governance, to provide a legacy for future generations and to preserve the land, water, culture, traditions, knowledge and vitality of community. Visitors and tribal members are greeted during ceremonies with outdoor courtyards, water features and an outdoor amphitheater. These outdoor spaces incorporate an existing school and community center to create a campus like setting, while allowing circulation for a vehicle maintenance component.
